NuvaRing® Warnings

Since NuvaRing® birth control is a relatively new form of contraceptive there are few studies regarding its safety and effectiveness. However, as early as 1995 studies had shown there was an increased risk of venous thrombosis (blood clots) in contraceptives containing desogestrel compared to second generation birth control that contained other types of older and safer progestins. The FDA acknowledged this in November 1995 and cited new studies which indicated about a two-fold increase in the risk of venous blood clots associated with products such as the NuvaRing® containing desogestrel (Source: New England Journal of Medicine). If blood clots form in your legs they can travel to the lungs and cause blockages. Blood clots can also from in the eye causing partial vision loss or blindness. In severe cases blood clots can result in stroke, brain damage and death.

The following symptoms may indicate a serious problem associated with NuvaRing® side effects:

  • sharp chest pains, coughing blood, or sudden shortness of breath (possible clot in the lung);
  • pain in the calf (back of lower leg - possible clot in the leg);
  • crushing chest pain or heaviness in the chest (possible heart attack);
  • sudden severe headache or vomiting, dizziness or fainting, problems with vision or speech, weakness, or numbness in an arm or leg (possible stroke);
  • sudden partial or complete loss of vision (possible clot in the eye).

The side effects of NuvaRing® can increase based on several health and risk factors. Increased risks include: women over 35 years of age, diabetes, smoking more than 15 cigarettes a day, and high level of blood cholesterol or fat.
